Pretend Play Isn’t Dead!

As I was chasing Ryland all around the park this afternoon, two young girls frolicked by. Of course my little flirt had to get a closer look and happily toddled over to the “big kid” yard to follow them. Well, clearly we couldn’t keep their pace as they swung on the monkey bars, scaled the ladders and stairs, and whooshed down the slide, but in passing I overheard part of their conversation (yes, I’m a creepy eavesdropper) and one of them kept saying that they had to get to the other side of the structure before the witch could get them. [Sadly, the witch was this old lady who was doing some stretching and tai chi in the park (if she only knew)]. The best part: they had a little teddy bear that they would throw to each other to “save it from the witch” as they took turns swinging… my heart seriously melted. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was to hear them playing in their imaginary world. It has really bothered me that kids these days don’t “play” anymore. The streets are no longer alive with games of kick-the-can or hide-and-seek the way they used to. I have the fondest memories of all the kids on my block getting together for epic games every night until the street lights came on or our parents called us in for dinner. I feared that this type of pretend play was becoming extinct… until today. Thank you, two random little girls, for renewing my faith in today’s youth. Keep the imagination alive!
